Electrolytes: What You Need To Know

Everything Electrolytes!

When we run, we lose electrolytes. Electrolytes are what allow our nerves and muscles to conduct action: running! When we run low on them, we begin to feel weak and incapable. We can experience muscle cramps and even injury!

The important electrolytes are: sodium, chloride, magnesium, potassium and calcium. The MOST important electrolytes for runners are sodium and chloride because we most easily lose them.

A good rule of thumb is: if exercising for more than an hour, take an electrolyte supplement or have an electrolyte drink.

Electrolytes lost during a workout varies from person to person. However, the average amount of electrolytes lost in each sweat session are:

Sodium: 220 mg

Potassium: 63 mg

Calcium: 18 mg

Magnesium: 8 mg

It’s important to use electrolytes to keep your body balanced and functioning properly! Don’t stress over it, but if you exert yourself during a session, its wise to consume some electrolytes!
