Post-holiday I often see so many people performing excessive cardio. While cardio is important for your health, doing excess cardio only results in excess calorie burn, intense hunger and fatigue. It also doesn’t result in any gains, which is what we truly want. While it might be tempting to step out for a long run or walk–it’s wise to think again…
The recipe for success post-holiday is to strength train. Building muscle is the formula for a higher and faster metabolism, stronger bones, protected joints, better cognitive function, greater longevity. Post-holiday, use that extra energy and glycogen (stored sugar) to GROW your muscles through strength training. You will feel extra strong and energized in the gym, enabling yourself to lift heavier and to train more intensely than other days–a great use of stored sugar!
It’s also wise to perform some cardio for your heart as well as your entire body–just don’t make it your entire focus. My recommendation is to go for a walk or jog and do a strength session. This way you ensure you’re taking care of all of your bodily needs!
All of this being said: you do not NEED to train post-holiday. However, it may be just what you need to feel better and more energized!
