I truly believe that the decisions we make in the morning can help steer our success for the day. Over time, I’ve generated a list of morning tasks that I accomplish every. single. morning. that set me up for a great day (at least, they attempt to).
-Pray. Before I even get out of bed I say a prayer—even if it needs to be quick. Spending time with God sets the tone for my entire day. Another great option is reading from the bible, having an app with a daily verse, or just a moment alone doing something you feel God’s presence in.
-DRINK WATER! The first thing anyone should put in their body when they wake up is water. After laying comatose for several hours, your body is dehydrated. Water energizes your body, kickstarts your metabolism, aids digestion and improves mood. Start with 8 oz. I drink 16-20 oz.
-Take any needed vitamins or supplements. Right now, I take this prenatal (pregnancy!), Iron and have these Paleovalley electrolytes, scroll down, try Watermelon (save 15%). I love being extra hydrated. Some vitamins you may need to take with food, so just take them with your morning snack or meal (below).
-Change out of PJ’s. I know, for some of you…this is tough. But I wake up and immediately get dressed in my workout outfit. Even though I’ve been working out later morning to allow my body to digest and relax a bit more in the mornings, being “ready to go”—whatever that looks like for you—is great for motivation and discipline.
-WOMEN: EAT! Even a snack. This podcast episode with Dr. Stacy Sims sheds light on why women should be waking up and eating—fasting has negative consequences on a woman’s hormones, metabolism and energy.
-Delay caffeine until after you’ve had some food in your stomach. Trust me: caffeine first thing can lead to an upset stomach, anxiety, a cortisol rush and undesirable adrenaline. I’ve been making a frothy, creamy coffee after a small meal.
-SUNLIGHT! Now, I get not every morning is sunny or getting out in the sun isn’t easy, but even 5 minutes of direct sunlight (yes, run out into your driveway!) is great for your circadian rhythm, energizes your body and boosts your mood.
-Light movement. My husband and I take our puppy Whiskey on a walk together every morning—it allows us to wake our bodies up gently, get the blood flowing and also spend time together as a family.
-With that, spend time with someone you love, call someone, send a text, etc. My husband and I try to spend even 5 minutes together before we get the day going. Just being able to connect with another person—even if you need an hour alone first—is so good for your mental health.
