Why runners need a STRONG CORE!
Disclaimer: visible abs ≠ strong core. Some people are genetically predisposed to have visible abs more easily. It also comes down to how lean you are, how much muscle you have, how you’re training. Visible abs are largely made in the kitchen.
What is actually critical for running? A strong core. You can have an INSANELY strong core and not have visible abs. And that’s what matters.
You need to have a strong core for running because:
1) it’s solid foundation for a strong body overall
2) promotes stabilization of the torso when running: keep chest, back, abs and obliques stable when running
3) protect you from injury: knee, ankle, hip, back, legs
4) protects your posture when running, conserving energy in the long run
5) maintains proper balance, especially on uneven terrain
6) improves overall running efficiency
A strong core is literally at the “core” of a powerful runner. Do not underestimate building your core!
